Educating Esme- Fourth Literature Circle In this section Esme is really reflecting on her class, her students, her job. She pray to God to ask for help for her students as well as herself. It is hard when your students have a hard home life. His mom in front of Esme beat B.B. Esme helped him and tried to comfort him by hugging and kissing him. Is this allowed? I understand that Esme was trying to help the student by letting them know that she cares but there are certain boundaries between a student and their teacher. It is also surprising to see how many parents openly tell Esme personal stories. It is nice to see that the parents trust Esme enough to talk about that sort of thing with the parents, but once again I feel like some lines are being crossed. One of the students, Asha brought her younger brother to school, she was trying to protect him from the events that occur at home. Asha did not have a note from the mother telling Esme about this, nor did the mother ever show up. I never would expect this type of thing to happen, but once again many unordinary things occur in this novel. It was nice of Esme to allow this to happen, though there are restrictions about this in schools. In this section you can really tell how Esme is contemplating the idea of teaching. I was also surprised to see that Esme had to talk to the class about sex education and they are only in fifth grade. Esme approached B.B about his attitudes lately in class but he did not want to talk, she asked him if he was taking his anger out on her because of his father. Instead of answering, B.B cried and stomped away. Esme wrote a note to the counselor about this. B.B admitted that he was being abused at home, Esme was stuck on what to do. This made me realize that there is a chance that this could happen to students I may have in class. It is my job to get help for the students and to notice if the students attitudes seem different or show up to school with any sort of markings on them. The only thing the counselor said she could do is feel bad, if she did anything more she said it would turn into a bigger nightmare. I do not agree with this, there is always something that can be done. Melanie is another student in Esme class, she has problems with stealing. When Esme approached Melanie about this she admitted to it. I thought it was a great idea how Esme said next time she has a feeling she mind steal, to tell Esme so she could distract her with doing something else. Lastly, Another student who Esme has often gets sick, Esme gets to the bottom of this to find out why. Here, he eats multiple hamburgers at lunch time. Esme approaches the people in the cafeteria letting them know they shouldn’t allow him to do this. She is a teacher who truly cares about her students.
